According to the “Vigneri” winemaking philosophy,
the production of fine
wines in full respect of
nature and traditions began with a selection of the vine
shoots, planted with a
goblet-training system, as
told by the history of Lipari.

Everything we do reflects this philosophy:

the finest that nature
and tradition has to offer, in terms of both farming and winemaking.

Fire shaped the Aeolian Islands, a fertile archipelago, dominated by the sun, the winds and the sea. From the moment we discovered Lipari, it left its mark on us, so we decided to give back what this land has given us, declaring our love with our wines. Wines that represent the essence of the island, its history and its people: their strength, hard work and ability to find their very essence in the soil that yields them food and serves as their home.

The origin of these wines can be felt from the very moment you step foot here. Soils, hills, and ravines proudly show off a considerable quantity of pumice and obsidian: minerals this territory is made of. The former is a light, magmatic stone, ultra-light due to its considerable porosity, which makes for loose soil with efficient drainage. Obsidian is a volcanic glass formed by the rapid cooling of lava. Both of these stones speak of the territory, the archipelago, and Lipari, constituting an integral part of their history, their past. These are the elements that have made this place so unique, as we can see today. The Tenuta di Castellaro estate originates from a deep desire to share this corner of paradise while celebrating this territory which is so dear to us, so akin to our nature and our character. For this reason, our coat of arms is tied to these lands. The wines that spring from this land, both vigorous and soft at the same time, highlight every peculiarity of the soil from which they draw nourishment, expressing this rich and beautiful land in an authentic way.

The Tenuta di Castellaro estate is a tribute to the Aeolian Islands, a place that’s genuine, authentic and alive. The essence of this place pours out with the wine, which more than any other product from the toils of man represents his strength, his labor, his ability to draw the very essence of his history from the ground on which he lives. This approach to natural winemaking can be attributed to the chance meeting with Salvo Foti, the founder of the “Vigneri” Consortium, who more than any other has managed to interpret the Aeolian culture and territory through wine.

Each vineyard was planted to respect this ancient and traditional growing system with a chestnut wood pole that is not chemically treated and split by hand. In several plots, vine shoots were grafted with Malvasia di Lipari, Carricante, Nero d’Avola and Corinto grapes, and other native varieties that respect this land, for the production of white, red and rosé wines along with the famous Malvasia delle Lipari raisin wine.

Precisely for this reason, thanks to Salvo Foti’s decades of experience in vine-growing on volcanic soil, we decided to design a bio-energetic winery, built with advanced technologies for a minimal environmental impact and for the natural treatment of the grapes and musts, which are handled exclusively by gravity, without the use of pumps. The cooling process is conducted naturally through a wind tower and other alternative forms of energy. Thanks to our involvement in the “Vigneri” Consortium, we share our experiences with other producers that adopt the same philosophy, rooted in the canons of Sicilian vine-growing and oenology, while respecting the local history, culture and traditions, since we are convinced that the strength of this land comes from their heritage and deep respect. Our desire and dream are to exploit the enormous potential and organoleptic quality of our vineyards, producing wines that can best express the unique character of this magnificent area. That is our mission.
